WHAT IS

MARCH MATNESS?

March Matness began as a global grassroots movement within the Pilates community — a month-long celebration of the classical mat repertoire as Joseph Pilates originally intended it. Started by instructors seeking to reconnect students to the foundational work, it quickly grew into an annual tradition practiced worldwide.

At Reforming Foundations, we've made it our own. Each day of March, one classical exercise is spotlighted — with full form guidance, modifications, and the "why" behind the movement. It's not about perfection. It's about showing up, practicing with intention, and celebrating what your body can do.

What began as a simple challenge has evolved into one of our most-loved community events of the year — a time when students and teachers move together, push each other, and rediscover why they fell in love with Pilates in the first place.

Each day March 1–31, one classical mat exercise is featured. Practice it, refine it, and feel the difference. Modifications are always available — we meet you where you are.

Post your practice and tag @reformingfoundations on social media — or simply show a staff member in studio. Either counts. We want to celebrate you however you prefer to share.

Collect Your Stickers
Every completed day earns you a sticker on your March Matness card. Bonus challenges earn extra stickers throughout the month. Keep your card — it's your ticket to the raffle.
The Most Stickers Win
Participants with the highest sticker counts at month-end are entered into a raffle for a 10-pack of mat classes. One winner will be selected per studio. Daily moves and bonus challenges both count. Show up, earn more, stack your chances.

DIFFERENCE

Reforming Foundations isn't a typical Pilates studio, and March Matness isn't a typical challenge. Everything here — the class size, the cueing, the pace — is a conscious choice made with your body in mind.

Whether you're brand new or a seasoned practitioner, you'll find a space that meets you where you are and moves forward with you — thoughtfully, carefully, and always with intention.

Spine Stretch → Quadruped Spinal Articulation & Saw → Seated Spinal Rotation
The classical Spine Stretch and Saw can place excessive load on the lumbar spine when performed without a neutral foundation. RF replaces these with movements that achieve the same mobility goals while protecting the low back — keeping articulation safe and intentional.
3/15 & 3/17
Neck Pull & Shoulder Bridge — Modified for Safety
The classical Neck Pull creates strain risk for those with cervical sensitivity, and the full Shoulder Bridge can overload the lumbar extensors. RF modifies both — adjusting positioning and load to make these exercises accessible, effective, and safe for a broader range of bodies.

Crab Removed — Seal Stays
The Crab is removed from the RF calendar entirely. It's one of the most advanced rolling exercises in the classical sequence — and unlike the Seal, it requires rolling forward until the top of the head contacts the mat, placing direct load on the cervical spine. For a general mat class population, that risk isn't worth it. The Seal delivers the same spinal massage and breath work while staying safely on the shoulder blades throughout.
